Proxxon vs Dremel TL;DR – Which Is Better For You?

Personally, overall, we like the Dremel 4000 as a do everything tool with the best performance specs.

However, if you are mainly doing precision and detail type tasks where you don’t need the extra power and range of speeds, the Proxxon would have a strong case.

You might consider the Proxxon 38481 Professional Rotary Tool IBS/E if…

You want an alternative to the Dremel rotary tools

You want a rotary tool designed/engineered and manufactured for precision and detail

You want a rotary tool that is made to a high quality, but are OK that the max Amps is 0.9 Amps and max speed is 20,000 RPM

You want a quiet running rotary tool

You might consider the Dremel 4000 if…

You want one of the most popular rotary tools on the market with many kit options

You want a rotary tool with 1.6 Amps and variable speed range of 5,000 to 35,000 RPM

You want a rotary tool that is compatible with ALL Dremel accessories and attachments

You want a rotary tool that has significant versatility in the range of finishing tasks you can perform with it, but may not be as precise as the Proxxon unless you use the Dremel Flex Shaft Attachment

You might consider the Dremel 3000 if…

You want a rotary tool with 1.2 Amps and variable speed range of 5,000 to 35,000 RPM

You want a rotary tool that is compatible with ALL Dremel accessories and MOST attachments

You want a rotary tool that has significant versatility in the range of finishing tasks you can perform with it, but may not be as precise as the Proxxon unless you use the Dremel Flex Shaft Attachment

You are OK with having an older model Dremel rotary tool than the Dremel 4000, 4200 and 4300

  • Proxxon 38481 IBS/E User Experience

Good Things:

Very quiet when in use – even at full speed

Has a nice weight balance throughout the tool and feel very high quality in hand (feels very solid and well manufactured/engineered)

Tool doesn’t seem to heat up very quickly when in use

Feels more precise than the Dremel

Bits/Accessories are good quality like the Dremel

Potential Improvements:

Dremel feels like a more all-around tool for a wider range of tasks and heavier tasks (even if its louder), whereas the Proxxon is mainly for precise, lighter and detail tasks and doesn’t have as much capability to be overloaded or go to higher end tasks (there can be issues with the electronic speed control circuitry)

Option of a 3 Jaw chuck bit holding system would be good

Availability of higher end speed > 20,000 RPM

Case isn’t great quality

  • Why Get A Proxxon 38481 IBS/E Over the Dremel 4000 and 3000

– If you want a Dremel alternative rotary tool

– If you want a quiet rotary tool

– If you a very well engineered, manufactured and machined rotary tool which is great for precise and detail orientated tasks such as small tasks, and engraving, carving, polishing etc.

– If you want a rotary tool that comes with 6 different sized collets

  • Why Not Get A Proxxon 38481 IBS/E Over the Dremel 4000 and 3000

– If you want a rotary tool with more than a 0.9 Amp motor, and capable of RPM speeds of greater than 20,000RPM

– If you want the flexibility that the Dremel tools provide in terms of range of tasks due to the higher Amperage, RPMs and arguably better internal speed control circuitry

– If you want a cheaper rotary tool kit to the Proxxon

–If you want the added benefit that Dremel tools are made with the Dremel accessories/bits and attachments in mind

  • Summary of the Proxxon 38481 IBS/E Tool & Kits

View On Amazon

From Proxxon, this tool is: “Usable for extended periods when grinding, polishing, cleaning, cutting and engraving. Ideal for mechanics, model builders, jewelers, opticians, artists and electronic enthusiasts.”

In our opinion, the Proxxon does not provide as much value for money as an all-around rotary tool compared to the Dremel.

But, it may present great value for money for those looking for a precise rotary tool for the lighter and more detailed tasks, that also runs quiet.

– Seems to run hotter than the Proxxon

  • Summary of the Dremel 4000 Tool & Kits

The Dremel is probably the most popular rotary tool and rotary tool tool kit on the market.

It had many features, higher end performance, and as much versatility in range of tasks it can perform as you would want out of a rotary tool.

Unless you priorities are precise/detail and light tasks, the Dremel 4000 is probably a better option in terms of value for money, and practically than the Proxxon.

– Seems to run hotter than the Proxxon

–Dremel 4000 has a higher Amperage/power, and is a later model than the 3000

– Not as many tool kit options as the Dremel 4000

  • Summary of the Dremel 3000 Tool & Kits

The Dremel 3000 is still a very popular tool in the Dremel rotary tool range.

Many of the reasons you would choose the Dremel 4000 over the Proxxon apply to the Dremel 3000 too.

You would get the Dremel 3000 over the 4000 if you don’t mind having an older model Dremel rotary tool, and you’re ok with slightly less Amps at 1.2 Amps comapred to 1.6 Amps in the Dremel 4000.
