  • Foredom SR User Experience

Good Things:

Very high quality engineering and manufacturing of the motor, shaft, hand piece and bits – the tool as a whole is very well constructed and feels great in the hand

Accessories are very high quality

Motor is powerful, runs smoothly and is great for long term use

Foot pedal and ability to do forward and reverse speed control gives you tremendous control over using the tool

Is great for a wide range of tasks like jewelry making, woodworking, gunsmithing, working with ceramics & more

Potential Improvement:

Speed at 18,000 RPM could be higher

  • Why Get A Foredom SR

vs a Foredom TX…

Foredom SR is more affordable

Foredom SR has a wider range of kits available than the Foredom TX

Foredom SR has a higher max speed than the Foredom TX

Foredom SR comes in both 115 volt model, and 230 volt model (only where 115/120 volt is not available)

Most users get the SR, so there is more information out there from fellow users on this model

vs a Dremel 9100 Fortiflex

Foredom SR has more power

Foredom SR has more specialised and a wider range of kits for specific uses like wood carving, jewelry making for example

All Foredom SR include more accessories than the Dremel 9100 kit which only has 21 accessories

Foredom feels like it is engineered better (but the Dremel is still a high quality flex shaft tool)

Foredom SR can run in forward OR reverse speeds. Benefits of running in reverse speed includes:

  • Left handed users have more control of the cutting tool
  • Reverse helps to keep dust and other debris flying away from right handed users
  • Alternating motor direction helps to extend the life of certain abrasives
  • Reverse helps with accomplishing symmetrical grinding and carving techniques
  • Reverse makes it easier to back out stuck drill bits
  • Alternating motor direction makes it easier and faster to polish metals

  • Why Not Get A Foredom SR

vs Foredom TX…

Foredom TX has almost twice the power of the Foredom SR

Foredom TX is better for more heavy duty tasks like power carving and porting engines

vs Dremel 9100 Fortiflex…

Dremel is made to fit Dremel accessories and attachments (but the SR can fit alot of the Dremel accessories)

  • Summary of The Foredom SR

In summary, almost no user of the Foredom SR has a bad word to say about it.

The design and quality of the tool is first class, and the kits come with everything you need (apart from a hanger if you need one).

If you are looking for a flex shaft tool that has no real drawbacks, it’s very unlikely you will be dissatisfied with one of the Foredom SR kits.

Foredom TX Series Review

The Foredom TX series flex shaft tools are for a smaller % of users who want more power out of their flex shaft tool than what the Dremel 9100 or the Foredom SR delivers.

  • What Are The Main Features And Design of The Foredom TX

The Foredom TX series is good for flex shaft users who want more power for heavy duty tasks out of their flex shaft tool.

It is designed for more demanding work like carving/cutting out out large quantities of wood, or porting engines.

The main features of the Foredom TX series are:

Hang up motor (hang up by hook/bale)

1/3 horsepower motor at continuous load (compared to the SR series 1/6 horsepower)

Can run in forward or reverse speeds

Can run up to max speeds of 15,000 RPM (compared to the SR series 18,000 RPM)

Comes as a 115 volt model

  • Foredom TX Kit Options

1) Foredom 5400 TX Motor, Woodcarving Kit

The kit comes with:

Series TX Motor: Most powerful Foredom motor at 1/3HP. Permanent magnet DC motors that feature the latest in flex shaft technology. These ball bearing models utilize advanced rare earth magnets (in place of the wound fields in the universal type Series SR motors) that deliver more torque at the low end and throughout the entire speed range of 500 to 15,000 RPM. No other flex shaft gives you greater control of the cutting tool, drill, or bur under any load. It comes equipped with a motor bale for hanging, and the standard 39″ long key-tip inner shaft, and outer sheath for connecting to any of Foredom’s interchangeable handpieces. Foredoms permanent magnet motors require the use of a C.TXR, C.SXR, or C.EMX speed control. Damage will result if the motor is connected to any other speed control.

C.SXR Speed Control: The C.SXR has special electronics that converts AC current from an electrical outlet to DC current, the type required by Series TX motors. This control also has a different style plug that is made to fit the motor’s shielded-type plug. The C.SXR offers the same electronics and smooth control as the C.TXR but in a much heavier, cast iron housing. The added weight eliminates any unexpected movement of the control along the floor. The bottom surface of the speed control is covered with non-skid material. CSA listed. 7″ long, 5″ wide, 2-1/2″ high.

H.44T Handpiece:  This collet style handpiece is popular among woodcarvers as it accommodates larger accessories with shank diameters up to 1/4″. It comes with 3/32″, 1/8″ and 1/4″ collets. The tapered design allows for close and safe work. The H.44T is a member of the Foredom system of interchangeable hand pieces.

Accessories Included:

27 piece assortment of accessories with 3/32″, 1/8″ and 1/4″ shank accessories. It includes many unique items from Foredom- ScotchBrite Radial Bristle Discs, Purple Ceramic Sanding Bands and Discs, Typhoon Burs, V Stones, CeramCut Blue Stones, and more.

Potential Improvement:

Max speed is 15,000 RPM > perhaps look to increase this

  • Why Get A Foredom TX

Dremel 9100 Fortiflex Review

  • How The 9100 Fortiflex Differs To A Standard Dremel Rotary Tool

This tool is different to a standard Dremel rotary tool.

Standard Dremel rotary tools come as a rotary tool that can accept a a flex shaft attachment which you might choose to buy separately.

The Fortiflex is a dedicated flex shaft tool.

It has an in built flexible shaft coming off the main motor.

It also functions with a hand piece, and a speed controlling foot pedal.

The Fortiflex has a lower high speed than a standard Dremel variable speed rotary tool, but has much higher torque and horsepower.

  • What Are The Main Features And Design of The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex

Dremel describes the 9100 Forti-Flex as being “for detailed projects…with a motor that provides high torque at low speeds, making it perfect for power-carving, shaping and grinding applications.”

The main features of the Dremel 9100 Fortiflex are:

It is an electric/corded flex shaft tool

8 feet of electrical cord from tool to the power outlet

It comes as a motor with a flex shaft built in + a handpiece

Has a precision hand piece that is interchangeable – you can use other flex shaft tool handpieces on this Dremel Fortiflex

38 inch long flex shaft

Hang up motor (hang up by hook/bale on motor stand)

2.5 Amp motor – 1/5 horsepower

The Dremel 9100 accepts all Dremel accessories and attachments

Three-jaw chuck that accepts all Dremel accessories with shank sizes from 0 In. to 5/32 In. (4.0 mm)

Variable speed foot pedal. You control the speed of the tool from a foot pedal on the ground.

Variable speed – 0-23,000 RPM – control speed from an easy to use foot pedal

Comes as a 120 volt model

It excels as a tool for precision high power tasks like wood carving, and working on plastics and soft metal doing engraving, detailing and grinding.

  • Potential Drawbacks Of The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex

Has a chuck key/tool to loosen and tighten the chuck, instead of a button/twist chuck that the Dremel 3000 has – you have to store the key in safe place and not lose it

The chuck on this Dremel allows bits to sit only about 50% of the way in compared to the Dremel 3000 for example which allows the bits to sit in very securely. Although, it doesn’t appear to effect operation at all

The hand piece you hold can heat up after extended operation, so you sometimes need to let it cool

  • What Is The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex Used For?

It is specifically designed for power-carving, shaping and grinding applications.

But, if you have accessories for other tasks, it can accept all Dremel accessories and attachments – so it could cut, grind, sand, grind, route, polish clean, carve , engrave + more.

It is a high torque, lower speed tool, so keep in mind that if you think a Dremel 4000 or 4300 with a high speed of 35,000 RPM might be better.

  • Who Might The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex Be For?

Those who want the manoeuvrability with a Dremel tool that a flex shaft offers – the hand piece is interchangeable with other flex shaft tool hand pieces to provide you with more options, as well as allowing you to use any existing hand pieces that you’ve already invested in.

Those who need to undertake detail based projects and tasks – great for carving and engraving! But, also comes with grinding, sharpening, cleaning, polishing, sanding and drilling bits

Those who want a dremel tool that offers high torque at lower speeds

Those who want a good alternative to the Foredom SR series flex shaft tool

  • Who Might The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex NOT Be For?

Those who want an electric dremel rotary tool that isn’t a flex shaft model

Those that want a cordless Dremel tool

Those that want a heavy duty flex shaft tool like the Foredom TX series motor tool

vs Foredom TX…

Dremel 9100 has less power

Dremel 9100 has less accessories than the Foredom TX kit (27 vs. 21)

Dremel 9100 engineering and construction is good, but the TX is the best on the market

Dremel 9100 can’t run in both forward OR reverse speeds.

  • Summary of The Dremel 9100 Fortiflex

There is nothing wrong with the Dremel 9100. It is still a great quality flex shaft tool.

If you have a preference for Dremel, it would be a good selection for you, or if you want the higher end speed the Dremel offers than both the Foredoms.

If we had to choose between the Foredom SR and the Dremel, we would choose the Foredom SR because of the overall high quality of the tool’s performance and construction, and the value of the kits.

Want A Cheaper Option? Look at the SE 979FSG Flexible Shaft Grinder

If the two Foredom models above and the Dremel 9100 are too expensive for you, here is a cheap option.

The SE 979FSG is a lower quality flexible shaft tool, but it maxes out at 1/4 horsepower and 22,000 RPM.

As a bonus, you also get 40 accessories with the SE flex shaft kit, and the variable speed foot pedal.

Don’t expect the performance and quality of the Foredom and Dremel tools in the SE – just an inexpensive flex shaft tool for infrequent or light use.
