Best Dremel For Drilling Sea Glass: Buyer’s Guide

Other Names For Sea Glass

Drift Glass

Beach Glass (although this comes from fresh water, not salt water. Beach glass also appears less frosted than sea glass.)

What Is Sea Glass?

Sea glass is glass from man-made bottles, jars, containers, or any other glass object, that finds it’s way into the sea.

The glass is shaped and weathered by the waves, ocean floor and various other factors like the salt water and hydration – before it washes up on the shore.

The result is a piece of glass with some or all of the following characteristics:

Indents, pores and abrasions all over the surface of the glass

A frosted or cloudy look/texture in the glass. Sea glass is not shiny

Smooth edges

The process of a piece of man made glass becoming a recognised piece of genuine sea glass, can take a decade or more.

What Is A Dremel Used For When Drilling Sea Glass?

A Dremel is used as powered rotary tool to drill holes and shapes in sea glass.

Holes and shapes may be for decoration, or can be used to turn the glass into necklaces and other pieces of jewellery or other decorative pieces.

To protect the drill bits from bending/snapping, and to get more precision in the drilling, some users prefer to use a Dremel workstation/drill press.

However, other users have drilled with a Dremel tool free hand to drill sea glass successfully.

Types of Sea Glass

Sea glass comes in different shapes, sizes and colours.

It also washes up on beaches in most continents in the world.

How To Choose A Dremel For Drilling Sea Glass

Dremel have both corded and cordless ranges of rotary tools which are suitable for drilling sea glass.

However, when choosing a Dremel for drilling sea glass, you probably have these two main decision to make:

1. Do you want an all around variable speed Dremel tool that you can use for other tasks apart from drilling glass?

If so, a tool like the Dremel 4000 is better for you.

2. Do you want a more simple 1 speed or 2 speed Dremel tool that is designed specifically for precision type tasks?

If so, a tool like the Dremel 200 or Dremel 100 is better for you.

Always check that the tool you purchase is compatible with Drill bits and the drill workstation before purchasing.

Features To Look For In A Dremel For Drilling Sea Glass

Compatibility with drill bit you want to use

Speed you want to drill the glass with – most people choose a speed somewhere between 20,000 to 30,000 RPM

Ability to be placed in the Dremel workstation

Safety Tips For Using A Dremel For Drilling Sea Glass

Lubricate the drill piece

Follow Dremel instructions for operating the Dremel tool and using drill bits

Wear gloves

Wear safety glasses

NOTE: if you use the Dremel freehand above a bowl of water, there is chance for an electric shock hazard if you drop the Dremel. Using a flex shaft attachment or station to hold the tool is much safer.

How To Use A Dremel For Drilling Sea Glass

1. Secure the drill bit (should be diamond tipped bit) to your Dremel chuck or collet

2. If preferred, put your Dremel into the Dremel workstation/drill press (this is definitely safer – as you dont risk the Dremel falling in the water and creating a shock hazard)

3. Lubricate the drill bit

4. Fill a small container with water, and place a piece of wood or soft drill base inside – mark on the glass where you want to drill if you like beforehand

5. Position the container below the drill

6. Place the sea glass in the water (make sure it’s below the water level) on the soft surface/wood

7. If using a Dremel drill press/workstation, pull the lever down before you turn the Dremel on, to make sure it will be coming down on the part of the glass you want to drill (i.e. it lines up with your marking)

8. Set the speed of the Dremel to around 20,000 to 27,000 RPM and turn it on

9. Drill the glass freehand if you prefer, or operate the Dremel workstation to drill the glass precisely

10. You should now have a drilled piece of sea glass
