An 8 inch jointer is a wood jointer that can joint lengths of lumber up to 8 inches wide.
8 inch jointers are mostly closed stand, or ground based jointers – compared to most 6 inch jointers which are mostly bench top jointers.
Note that some of the 8 inch jointers ave a parallelogram design- which keeps the tables parallel and contributes to a better and more consistent cut.
Also, some 8 inch jointers may have a helical cutterhead, and not the standard straight knife cutterhead.
Helical cutterheads are intended to shear the wood, and be quieter in operation that a standard 2 or 3 knife cutterhead.
